Under dette aftensm\u00e5ltid, da han ble forr\u00e5dt, ofret V\u00e5r Herre Jesus, ut av kj\u00e6rlighet til dem som var hans egne i verden og inntil enden, sitt legeme og blod til Fadereren under br\u00f8dets og vinens skikkelser, ga det \u00e5 spise og drikke til apostlene, og s\u00e5 ga han apostlene og deres etterf\u00f8lgere i prested\u00f8mmet \u00e5 fremb\u00e6re det samme offer i fremtiden. Messen ihukommer f\u00f8rst og fremst innstiftelsen av <strong>Eukaristien<\/strong>, som gj\u00f8r Kristi oppdrag og offer stadig n\u00e6rv\u00e6rende \u00a0i verden. Dessuten er messen en ihukommelse av den kj\u00e6rlighet som Jesus hadde for oss til og med inn i D\u00f8den. I gammel tid ble de som var satt i bann, offentlig tatt opp i Kirken samfunn p\u00e5 denne dagen, og det er trolig dette som har gitt dagen dens navn, som er norr\u00f8nt: sk\u00edra = rense
